His is a story that many will recognize, but few have an opportunity to hear first hand. Nando Parrado recounts the extraordinary tale of how he and 15 of his teammates survived for 72 brutal days after their plane crashed into the frozen Andes Mountains more than 40 years ago. It remains one of the paramount survival stories of all time.
From the time the plane crashed on October 13, 1972 until their rescue on December 22, Nando and his fellow Uruguayan rugby teammates were forced to cross both physical and mental boundaries. After waking from a concussion only to learn that his mother had died on impact and his sister was near death, Nando became obsessed with surviving and emerged a hero after he and teammate Roberto Canessa walked for 10 days to find their salvation. Their story of courage, teamwork, determination and leadership, experienced at a level few have known, will leave you with a heightened awareness of the value of human life.Soon after the rescue of the 16 survivors, Nando worked with Piers Paul Read, the author chosen by the survivors to pen the best-selling book Alive. Twenty years later, Nando served as technical advisor to the Frank Marshall/Kathleen Kennedy production of the film of the same name starring Ethan Hawke as Nando. The success of the film quickly prompted requests for Nando to speak around the world about the “Miracle in the Andes” and he began doing so on a very limited basis in 1995. The requests for presentations continue to exceed the number that he is able to accept due to business and family obligations. Nando is the author of the New York Times bestseller Miracle in the Andes: 72 Days on the Mountain and My Long Trek Home, a major release from Crown books which tells the story of the Andes ordeal from an intensely personal perspective. In 2010, Nando was featured in the History Channel documentary I AM ALIVE: Surviving the Andes Plane Crash, which continues to air around the globe.
Since this experience, Nando has become a successful businessman and television producer. He is CEO of four companies in Uruguay. He also hosts several popular television programs in Uruguay including shows on nature, public affairs, autos and travel. He is also a highly sought-after speaker on the international lecture circuit.
In his spare time, Nando enjoys racing motorcycles, sports cars, stock cars and watercraft. He has many awards, including the European Team Cup for stock car racing and the Open Watercraft Championship in Punta Del Este, Uruguay. In 1991, Nando was part of a team of drivers who raced across the Sahara in stock model Peugeots. The trip, from Morocco to Tunisia, covered 8,500 km and took 28 days.
A native of Montevideo, Uruguay, Nando graduated from Stella Maris College run by the Irish Christian Brothers. He also participated in a study abroad in the United States that allowed him to attend high school in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Nando speaks five languages and travels extensively.
President of Mexico from 2006 to 2012, Felipe Calderón made economic reform the top priority of his administration. He implemented policies that catapulted Mexico into a powerful player in the global economy.
Under his administration the Mexican economy registered stability and economic growth. Despite the impact of the 2009 international economic crisis, he boosted competitiveness in Mexico by deregulating the economy, promoting free trade, competition, private investment and technical education, as well as increasing investment in infrastructure to unprecedented levels. He also led an unmatched effort to enforce the rule of law.
During his tenure, Mexico became one of the most important exporters in the world, exporting 60% of the total manufactured products in Latin American and Caribbean Region. When he took office, Mexico was the 9th largest exporter of vehicles in the world, and by the end of his administration it was the 4th largest, surpassing Spain, the UK and the US among others.
Currently, he is the Honorary Chairman of the Green Growth Action Alliance (WEF), member of the Policy Advisory Council of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), President of Sustainable Human Development Foundation, Member of the Board of Directors of the World Resources Institute and Chairman of the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate, responsible for coordinating the “Better Climate, Better Growth: The New Climate Economy Report”.

A highly decorated general and one of the most prominent combat commanders in American history, David Petraeus (U.S. Army, retired) has dedicated his life to public service, leading military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan and then serving as the director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
One of the most effective military leaders in recent U.S. history, General David H. Petraeus—a highly decorated four-star general, whose distinguished military career spanned over 37 years and culminated in six straight commands (five of which were in combat)—addresses the most significant global challenges facing us today, including ongoing international security issues, macroeconomic trends and the tasks of strategic leadership in the 21st century.
Widely credited for changing the course of two wars—by dramatically reducing the violence in Iraq when he led the so-called “Surge” and by halting the Taliban’s momentum in Afghanistan when he led the operation there—Petraeus was also instrumental in reshaping American military doctrine and then in implementing it when he led the conduct of comprehensive civil-military counterinsurgency campaigns.
Serving in multiple campaigns—including nearly seven years deployed following 9-11—Petraeus has been described as one of the “great battle captains of American history.” His command during many years in combat has resulted in comparisons to Ulysses S. Grant, John J. Pershing, George C. Marshall and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Following his military service, Petraeus led the CIA, where he oversaw significant achievements in America’s global counterterrorism campaign, pursued a substantial initiative to increase worldwide intelligence coverage, guided the development of a strategic plan for the agency and oversaw the establishment of a new Economic Security Center.
Petraeus has received numerous prestigious U.S. military, State Department, NATO and United Nations awards, including four Defense Distinguished Service Medals, three Army Distinguished Service Medals, the Secretary of State Distinguished Service Medal, the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, the NATO Meritorious Service Medal and the Combat Action Badge. Additionally, he has been decorated by 12 foreign countries. Petraeus currently serves as chairman of the Global Institute of KKR (a global private equity firm), as a visiting professor of public policy at CUNY’s Macaulay Honors College and a Judge Widney Professor at the University of Southern California.

In January of 2009 Tim was diagnosed with bladder cancer. For nine months he underwent painful treatments here in the valley in hopes of saving his bladder. After the last set of treatments his doctor gave him the painful truth that there was nothing more that could be done. He sent Tim to Loma Linda Medical where he was told the only way to save his life was to completely remove his bladder. On September 11 Tim checked in for what was to be a routine surgical procedure. The surgery came off without a hitch, but it was the post surgical time that put us all in for a long hard battle. He ended up in Intensive Care, not once but three times during his two and half month stay at Loma Linda. He was in a coma for 2 1/2 weeks at which that time they gave him only a 20 percent chance of survival. He has made a remarkable recovery thanks to the wonderful doctors and nurses at Loma Linda, to whom we owe a great deal of loving appreciation. Bladder cancer is the 4th most common cancer among men and 5th most common overall. A basic awareness of the symptoms and early treatment could save lives and prevent suffering.

The Frank Sinatra Starkey Hearing Technologies Celebrity Invitational is dedicated to the memory and music of Frank Sinatra and benefits the Barbara Sinatra Center for Abused Children. The Frank Sinatra Starkey Hearing Technologies Celebrity Invitational enjoys a rich history as one of the marquee golf and fundraising events in the Palm Springs, California desert. Each year, celebrities, amateur contestants, loyal sponsors and enthusiastic spectators from all over the country look forward to returning to this unique “celebrity friendly” event.
Known as “Frank’s little party in the desert,” Barbara and Frank Sinatra founded the Frank Sinatra Celebrity Invitational in 1988 to raise funds for the Barbara Sinatra Center for Abused Children at Eisenhower Medical Center, which opened in 1986. Through their efforts, and those of supporters throughout the world, the Frank Sinatra Starkey Hearing Technologies Celebrity Invitational is now one of the most successful events of it’s kind.
The mission of the Barbara Sinatra Center for Abused Children is to provide counseling for victims of physical, sexual and emotional abuse and to focus on prevention, community education and breaking the generational cycle of abuse. The Frank Sinatra Starkey Hearing Technologies Celebrity Invitational is a five (5) player team gross and net scramble golf tournament held at Eagle Falls Golf Course in Indio, California. The Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, also in Indio, is the tournament’s hotel and venue for three nights of parties and a spectacular luncheon and fashion show.
One (1) celebrity and four (4) contestants are a team. The team of four (4) amateur players remains together for two (2) consecutive days. The celebrity contestant changes teams for the second day. Current USGA handicaps are verified and applied to all contestants.
